Studying
Religious Studies is offered in Basel as a BA and MA degree subject and can be studied equally in combination with a second subject. The thematic focal area of religious studies in Basel is the history of religion in Europe, particularly from the late 18th to the 20th century, with particular attention paid to theoretical, reception-historical and religious-aesthetic issues.
The bachelor's studies begin with undergraduate studies, in which basic theoretical, methodological and religious-historical knowledge is imparted through courses on the history and methods of religious studies as well as an introductory lecture and two seminars on European and non-European religious history. The thematic focus of the proseminars on the history of religions is on the non-European history of religions (History of Religions I) with highlights on Asia, Africa and Ancient America as well as on the history of religions in Europe (History of Religions II).
In addition to attending the mandatory foundation courses, students have the opportunity to develop a profile in religious studies. For individual specialization and depending on their interests, students are provided with a variety of changing courses. The degree programs include seminars on the analysis of religious motifs in comics (BDs) and hip-hop, blasphemy and atheistic criticism of religion or secularization are just as much a subject as questions about the connection between law and religion.
In electives, students can also choose from courses relevant to religious studies and the history of religion from neighboring disciplines.
